What is language?
Language refers to the words we have and how we use them to communicate for a variety of purposes with others (i.e., requesting, refusing, commenting). Language is expressed through a variety of means including verbal language, written language, gestures, and body language. Children may have difficulties or delays in understanding language, using language and/or both using and understanding language. This may look like difficulties in the following areas: learning new words, using new words, combining words to form sentences, understanding words, understanding and following simple directions, using words for a variety of purposes (i.e., requesting, protesting, commenting), answering questions.
How Can a Speech-Language Pathologist Help?
An American Speech-Language-Hearing Association certified Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) can provide speech therapy services to address the delays in your child’s language. Services will include ways to increase their vocabulary, language use, language content and/or understanding of language. Speech therapy services will be tailored to your child’s unique needs. Goals will be developed to address those challenges and meet your child’s needs.
